I’m quite interested in the digital humanities. This project was an attempt to map, simply and intuitively, the births, deaths, and travels of major Greek and Latin authors.

Functionality is limited, but consider it proof of concept, at least. At its heart, a proposal: approaching the ancient world’s writers visually, geographically, and always in relation.

Theoretical Background

Research in Classical Studies may not immediately seem like terra incognita (puns intended). Over the course of the summer, in collaboration with Prof. James Ker, I developed online, interactive maps to present basic information about Greek and Latin authors – the same set of 50- 100 long-dead individuals, having written in long-dead languages, read every year by students all over the world.

One implicit premise of Classics: few study its authors without context. Given limited information available to the modern reader, a blurry line exists between a given text and its “About the Author” section. We learn about the Greco-Roman world from its writers as well as about the writers from their world; and we do well to consider the problems associated with their biases and unreliability. The dates and places of Caesar or Horace, cultural icons, are far more vivid than Homer or Longinus, pseudo-individuals. Even some ancient cities have no definite location on modern maps.

The goal of this project was not to redress centuries of scholarly uncertainty, but instead to consider: How might the tools available in the 21st century prove beneficial to a teacher of the first century? Already, huge movements are underway in Digital Humanities to mine, map, or graph voluminous quantities of data from volumes of historical or literary merit, compiling as much knowledge as humanly (or digitally) possible. At present, most of the databases are accessible to the limited number of scholars whose skills include both the classical world and the nuances of data science.

I aimed to create interactive graphics that are simple, intuitive, and still rigorous in their precision. In order to bridge the gap between Pleiades geo-nomenclature and the final product, plus every step in between, I had to know (or learn by pretending to know) more Javascript and SQL than they teach in most Ancient Greek courses. The application of DH drew me to the project, but what really engaged me were the difficulties and rewards of creating intuitive pedagogy: so that modern students can visualize the life of an author who lived in an effectively different world, thousands of years ago. When a Latin student sees represented Terence’s North African origin and his mysterious disappearance at a young age, shown against the backdrop of an expanding Roman Republic, she might read his plays with that much more insight and empathy.
